16 years.

I went to lunch with my mom today... and neither of us mentioned it....but I know we both remembered.. that today marks 16 years since my father passed away. I can't believe I've been on this earth long enough to remember something that happened 16 years ago... Anyway, I don't want to be a downer, but thought I'd mention some fun memories I have of my dad...

* I remember a lot about the time he was pretty sick...but only after he died when I was in college and helping my mom move did I realize how romantic he was. I found a box of love letters he'd written to my mom.. just random ones..notes...Anyway, it just made me smile to think of how he wooed my mom... She even said he told her he was going to marry her on their first date! ha! She was so freaked, she didn't go out with him again for months!

* He'd pick me up every day after middle school, but he'd park just down the street enough to let me walk home some of the way (b/c that was the cool thing). He totally understood things like that. :)

* He owned his own photography studio when I was a kid... and I remember hiding under the tables and scaring the clients.. haha.. He never got mad once... Granted, how scary can a 4 year old be?

* He had to carry and oxygen tank when he got sicker.. and he was often slower than mom and me. He'd wait on the bench outside whatever store we'd gone in sometimes while we'd go in somewhere to shop. I remember coming out of a store to see him sitting on a bench and a little kid talking to him. I guess the kid had wandered up to ask what his oxygen tank did (seriously, where are kids parents these days?!). My dad, being the comedian he was, told the kid to turn the tank up to the highest it would go... So he did and dad acted like he was floating, etc... Anyway, it still makes me laugh to think about.

* While my mom is a very sweet woman, she's not exactly Martha Stewart. haha.. Soooo my dad cooked. He actually loved cooking. I LOVED getting to be his helper and we'd often concoct things in the kitchen.. or at least he let me think I was concocting things when I was likely just completing a recipe.. haha.. :)

Anyway, I could go on and on, but I was blessed to have him in my life as long as I did and have some wonderful memories. And I don't really cry or anything when this day arrives every year. I dont know if that's b/c I'm trying to be a hard@ss or b/c I'd rather celebrate his life than cry about his passing...

I'm glad mom and I went to lunch today and didn't talk about it. She's an amazing lady and I've spent many years wishing she'd find someone to grow old with. But, I've come to realize what she's already verbalized...that she was lucky to have found her love once and she's happy with that.

So, here's to many great memories I hope I never lose. :) And to my awesome mom who had to be both parents to my crazy self back in high school. I wouldn't have wished that on anyone (trust me.. I was a handful.. haha).

It's so admirable for you to remember your dad this way. So many people often get so caught up in grief that they forget the special things about that person, I'm glad you are able to remember so much good. I know he would be so proud of you, and he must really love how close you are with your Mom. :) Thoughts and prayers are with you! :)
