I look like a human torpedo in a swimcap

So, I've been thinking about cardio workouts and have come to the conclusion that I really don't love the treadmill. I'm just not a natural runner. I DO it, but running is just something I kinda do as a means to an end (a tighter booty) ...or if I'm being chased. I mean, it's a great workout... but I've just never LOVED it. I also don't dig spin class. I mean, you're not going anywhere, but the teacher just keeps yelling to go faster and turn up resistance... I don't get it. I especially don't like it when the teacher is one who exclaims things like "visualize climbing the mountain!" Newsflash: There is no mountain. I visualize the clock reflecting in the mirror and how much longer I have to endure the instructor bouncing around on her bike while I contemplate throwing my water bottle at her. (But only b/c she's totally k*cking my butt since I'm out of shape!) And my butt hurts afterward like someone beat me with a stick. I know tons of people LOVE running and spinning...and I could definitely give it a chance, stick with it awhile, and likely learn to enjoy it more. I know that. But... I got to thinking...why do that, when I could do something I already know I really do love?

Swimming!

Swim caps. Goggles. Lane ropes.

I dig it.

I feel the same way about swimming that some people feel about running. It's relaxing, clears my head, and it's a great cardio workout. I don't even mind smelling like chlorine or bruises on my arms from accidentally bumping the lane rope... :) I swam competitively back in my high school days, have taught swim lessons, and my summer job as a teen was lifeguarding. In short, I like pools. :)

So, I've begun my quest for a gym with a great lap pool. In Tulsa, that's a challenge b/c swimming just isn't a big thing here. Two gyms decently close to my house have pools. One is kept at approximately boiling (overdramatic=me) so as to not freeze out the aquacise participants. Yeah. Not exactly workout-friendly.

The next gym is actually quite awesome and has a pool open for lap swimming at almost all hours of day. And the non-pool part of the gym has a zillion classes! I puffy heart classes. :) I just have to go check it out soon! :) The only downfall=half the professionals I know work out at that gym (again, likely being overdramatic). Not a big deal; I know I know... But really, I like to keep working out kinda private...or at least semi anonymous. And I prefer my current all-chick gym b/c I don't like working out with dudes because they grunt a lot, sweat profusely, and intimidate me on the hand weights for some reason. But, if my little gym isn't meeting my needs, it's just not. Soooo time to buck up on my end for the purpose of bettering of my backside (and other sides as well)....haha.... :)  So, headed to check it out this week. Guest pass here I come!

I just really want my workout to be something I enjoy doing. *shrugs* What about you? Is working out just a means to an end? Do you really like your workout? Thoughts on your gym? Do you like classes or just working out on your own? Are you a morning worker-outer or an evening? (I'm totally evening).

Welp, that was really random... *shrugs* It's a Monday. Random always works for a Monday...haha.. :) Hope the week has started off well for you, friends....

Oh also! I wanted to take a moment and introduce my friend, Maria! She's the one who set up the fun photoshoot over the weekend that I posted about. :) She just posted her first blog entry today and I'm excited for her to be joining the blogger world! She's also the one who set up that fun hip hop class I'm taking that I've blogged about. In short, she's a cool chick and I've talked her ear off about how awesome blogging is. If you have a moment to follow her Hijinks and High Heels (how cute is that name?!) or pop over and welcome her, I'm sure she'd totally love it! :)

Maria at the photoshoot...with a raspberry flavored beer and a curly straw...haha! Love it!
Happy Monday, friends!

I feel the exact same way about swimming! I started competitively swimming when I was 5 years old, stopped when I was 13 & then started back up in college. I miss it so much. I so wish we had an indoor pool close to us!

I honestly hate working out, so it is truly a means to an end for me. I'd just rather sit in bed, drink my coffee and read blogs. But alas, I need to work out. I have never been a runner, but I'm training for a 5k right now, and I've finally gotten to the point that while I'm running it is bearable because I feel like I'm actually doing pretty well!

Ahh, I hate working out. Even though I feel better after I do it, feel like I have more energy, love seeing the results, and helps me eat better....I just cannot stick to any sort of work-out routine!

I actually don't mind working out, it is just important for me to mix it up because I get bored really easily! I would LOVE to find a place where I could swim, but we live in the middle of nowhere and there is one gym with a pool and it has literally like no times for lap swimming.

I am totally a morning worker-outer, but unfortunately beings I commute to work it just doesn't work for me to get it done in the mornings anymore :(

I am a morning worker-outer only becasue by the time I get home from work, I am exhausted and have zero motivation to go to the gym! But I am not a "fan" of working out, but when I am done I am glad I got up and did it!

How you feel about running is exactly how I feel about my treadmill time. UGH. Our gym has a super lap pool and all I need to do now is get the hook up on a swim cap and googles. WOOT!! There really is nothing like a good swim..so relaxing and like you said, it really clears your head.

there are no good gyms with pools in Charleston. so frustrating. There are hardly any pools at all, come to think of it. I would love being able to swim instead of run. I wish we could be swim buddies!

I grew up swimming competitively in HS, taught swim lessons and lifeguarded too! Swimming is an amazing cardio workout!! Hope you find a good pool!

Ahh swimming...I agree it's such a great work-out that I actually enjoy doing. Can't wait to hear about the new place you're trying. I've always had trouble findin a decent lap pool also. The exercise I really enjoy right now is Zumba! I know it's super trendy right now but it really is alot of fun. And it's a great workout!

I have grown to love running mainly because it is so easy to just go out and do it (as opposed to driving to the gym, etc.) However, as I get older, my body isn't liking hitting the pavement like it used to. I thought about getting into swimming but I just feel like it is will take so much more effort. Plus, me in a bathing suit is not my fave.

I hate running too! I really should get back into swimming- my gym has a great pool that I never take advantage of! You look amazing, so whatever you're doing to stay fit is obviously working!! : )

Love swimming! And, I'm pretty sure I used to work out at the 2nd gym you mentioned with the awesome pool (where all professionals in midtown seem to go). Does it rhyme with paint don? ha! Great pool- rarely crowded and the main facility is great. I never did the classes (always chickened out b/c I was alone) but I only heard great things about them!

I love swimming too! The thing I hate about working out is sweating and getting all hot. It just annoys me, but with a pool you don't have that problem! I'm currently trying to figure out what I want to do when I work out and I just don't know. I don't want to join a gym so I'm contemplating getting a treadmill for my house, but what if I hate it and never use it? Big, fat waist of money.

Thank goodness, someone else who is not a fan of the running. I ran track in high school and HATED it then. I still hate it. I will only run now if I am being chased and the person is waving proof of being able to kill me (ie a knife or a gun) because I refuse to run anymore.

I do like spinning though. I don't even listen to the mean instructors. I'm like Gary B*sey up in that room. I'm in my own realm. I seriously play out scenarios that I'm on the tour de france with Lance and everyone else is my competition. I'm sure they think I'm nuts but it gets me through the class! hahahaha
