Hiya friends! Quick post asking for some tips...
Eric's 30th is FINALLY approaching! I tease with the 'finally' b/c I'm just a wee bit older, so when I turned 31, there's two months where he's still 29. The "Hey, Jackie, did you hear what I said or are you losing your hearing in your old age?" stuff keeps flying out of his mouth during this month and it's super hi-larious. *sarcastic eye roll*
:)
Anyway, want to do something fun to celebrate! He threw me a pretty awesome shindig last year, but he doesn't want a big shindig like that. So, thinking something smaller here and then a weekend away might be fun! Buuuuut not anywhere super far b/c that would kill the whole "quick" (and affordable) weekend trip thing. We thought about Vegas, but he didn't seem super thrilled with that. Ideally, I think we'd both like to go to Seattle, Vancouver, Montreal, or somewhere totally unreachable from Tulsa for a quick weekend in other words...haha..
Actually if Eric had his way, we'd be taking a surfing vacation. That was his favorite thing in Barbados. I'll post about that later, but let's just say I considered paddling a big feat in my surfing lesson.
Neither of us have been to Austin, so we're leaning towards giving it a shot! Obviously things could still change, but wanted to ask y'all.. Have you been to Austin? Do you live in Austin? If so, where would you suggest we stay? Off 6th street? Or in the SoCo area? Somewhere else? Hotel suggestions? HELP!
Also, please mention any great restaurants or must-do/must-sees if you have any! Right now the hotel thing is where my googling efforts are being spent.
Other options we've tossed around include New Orleans, Chicago, and St. Louis. But, neither of us have been to Austin, so it has extra appeal.
Any tips appreciated!!

I'm a native Austinite, so I'll do my best to help! As far as hotels, Hotel San José, The Driskill, or The W would be my top 3. The first two are definitely more "Austin" than the W if you are looking for that experience.
Great restaurants - Uchi or Uchiko if you love sushi, Hudson's on the Bend is a bit further out towards the lake but is SO good, ANY of the food trailers...
SoCo is great for shopping and people watching. Town Lake (now called "Lady Bird Lake" is great for walking/running), Barton Springs for swimming and people watching....
Definitely check out the music scene downtown as well. Hope this helps!
I actually just moved to Austin about a month ago. I really like it here so far. I really like Town Lake. Been running there the last couple of weeks. The water bikes are fun. If you catch a movie I like the Flixbrew house in Round Rock. I really haven't got out to many restuarant, but the bbq has been good everywhere Ive been and Chuys has been my favorite tex mex spot. If you are looking for a tour. I have been on Austin Overture. Its pretty good and relaxing. Here's my post for when I first visited Texas before I moved here. Maybe it will help.

We Loooove going to Austin for weekend trips! I'd say definitely stay off 6th st or 4th st. You should check Stubbs and see if they're having a concert that weekend. Also, be sure to eat at Shady Grove! I know you love a good mexican place and Shady Grove can't be beat! Great atmosphere, patio, huge margaritas and deeeelish food! Have fun girl!
I planned my sister's bachelorette party in Austin last year. None of us had ever been, but we had SO much fun!! We stayed at the Driskill on 6th street and it was fabulous! Have fun :)
I've lived in Austin for 9 years. It's definitely a fun town.
Hotel San Jose in on South Congress. So you'll be right in with the action/shops/restaurants/tourists/locals. Perla's is a restaurant near this hotel that I really like.
The W is on 2nd street, a very hip/recently updated area. Sushi/tapas/bars are all very close by. La Condesa is great restaurant nearby.
The Hilton on 4th is a nice hotel. This is walking distance to 6th street.
I highly recommend Barton Springs Pool. Need more info just email me!
Stay on South Congress! There is a great Embassy Suites we ALWAYS stay at on SC. Also go to Hula Hut, Home Slice Pizza, Have a fancy dinner at the 4 Seasons, go to bars on 4th, go for a run on town/ladybird lake. Go shopping on South Congress, go to the original whole foods, go to the domain and coffee bean and tea leaf. Text/Call me for more recs. We go about 6 times a year :)
My husband *finally* turns 30 next month! We've been doing the 31/29 limbo since June and damn if that doesn't make a girl feel old!
As for Austin? I've only been once so I am absolutely no help there!
I have lived in Austin my whole life, all 27 years. You can stay downtown which as some nice Hotels including the Driskill Hotel on 6th. Some say it's haunted!! But also about 30 minutes outside of Austin is the Lost Hyatt Resort, which is really nice and relaxing.
If you come you have to go to the Salt Lick BBQ, in Driftwood, Rudy's BBQ has my favorite Breakfast Taco's. Hey CupCake is fun and yummy, Whole Foods is great to vist and have a quick lunch!! The Oasis, is a nice restaurant over looking the lake and on the weekends they have live music ( pretty much everywhere in Austin as live music, most nights of the weeks). If you want to go dancing the Broken Spoke on Lamar is great!! One thing about downtown is, that is where single adults, college kids and 18 years old go. My husband and I don't go down there. South Congress really isn't a place I go, unless I need to do something there. The Domain has awesome shopping, that's more of where I would go, my Husband just wires their new True Relgion Jean Store. About 30 minutes south of Austin is San Marcos which has the Outlets, there AWESOME!! 7 jeans should have their store open now and and they have a Tory Bruch(love) outlet too.
I know I'm forgetting a ton of stuff but living here all my life my brain is going a mile a minute of things to do!!
Oh you can also take in a game at the Round Rock Express!! Also go swimming at Braton Springs.
Have Fun!!
Well, well, well...you're coming to Austin (hopefully)!! You will have so much fun here. There are tons and tons of things to do and I'm going to email you. I do love me some Shady Grove (mentioned above) but it's not mexican food...it's burgers/chicken sandwiches, etc. One thing is for certain, we are a foodie town and have tons of wonderful restaurants, lots of great live music, and plenty to keep you entertained for the weekend. I would absolutely add Esther's Follies to your list of evening entertainment.
Dave and I even did a "staycation" here last summer. Here is the post of what we did: http://whenagirlsgottagab.blogspot.com/2011/08/great-groupon-escape_14.html
Ok, emailing you more :)
I've never been to Austin but I heard its a fun city! Looking forward to hearing about it if you end up going!
