-what I said at the ER making light of the sitch..
Overly detailed rant. Sorry. Skip ahead to the pics if you want. haha...
Yeah, so I may have broken my back. Or I actually did. Yeah. Whatever.
Today, woke up, a little sore from my abs n ass class at the gym. Threw on sweatpants, brushed teeth, put in contacts and headed down to walk little G. And that's where the day took a serious unplanned turn. haha.. I took one step on my stairs (dont live on a first floor) and I.GOT.AIR. Think comic strip/banana peal air. yeah, lost my footing and flew...landing square on my back..where I continued to slide down the stairs (on my back) and landed at the bottom of the first set of about 10 stairs, crumpled like a little doll.
Once I was able to breathe, I realized it was my back. And I couldnt move.
So, I laid there, half on the bottom stair, half on the midway point where the stairs turn. I knew if it was my back, moving could do more damage..but I also knew I needed to get to my phone. So, I crawled on all fours slowly up the stairs, gritting my teeth. Made it to my bedroom and got my phone. Called my friend and neighbor, Vaughn, to get Gracie from the stairwell and bring her.
He took one look at me and said "ER." So, after a little coaxing (and the inability to move), I agreed. With his help, I held my thighs with my hands hunched over (yeah, I was like a blonde little quasimoto) and walked to his car...and went to the ER.
So, off we went to the ER.. I was busy making jokes at myself the whole time... talking about how I needed a pedicure (since I was staring at my feet)... haha... Got there, had xrays (OUCH-why do they contort you while you're DYING? haha).. What was originally thought to be an issue with my thoracic spine turned out to be a bigger issue-a compression fracture in the t7 vertebra.
Reasons doctor had no beside manner:
Him: Got your results...
Me: *wincing* WOO HOO! Am I dying? :)
Him: You'll be fitted for your brace soon then have an appt with an orthopedist.
Me: *look of shock. Vaughn said the color drained from my face and my jovial/sarcastic done just dropped.* A brace? What?
Him: It's worse than I thought. It's broken. You may or may not need surgery.
Me: I think I'm going to pass out. Like right now.
*Nurses rushed in and laid me down, put cold cloths on me and began fanning me*
So, anyway, to cut this shorter, they booked me an appt with an orthopedist today at 2pm, so Michele came and relieved Vaughn from his duty. Vaughn got friend duty super long for not being that close to me.. I mean...he dealt with the "I dont think I can get a bra on to go to the ER; will you hand me a jacket"...Yeah. So, I was happy to have such a good friend in Michele both to relieve Vaughn from dealing with me...and also to have a girl help me.
So, orthopedist basically dismissed the ER doc's (likely a resident's) opinion and said "Back brace? haha.. No, you will NOT be needing a back brace." Whew, sigh.of.relief. He told me how he'd done the same thing...and while it's very painful, it will just heal on it's own b/c my body's natural bracing system will do the trick. That said, he thinks I broke TWO vertebrae...and is setting up an MRI to determine. Then, he wants me to get a full body bone scan just to be sure...So, after I have that (this week), then he'll follow my case for a while with weekly apptments to make sure I'm healing.
That said, it will take a YEAR or more to heal. WHOA. He said it will flare up and I'll need to lay down, etc...I'll have quite a bit of solid discomfort for like three weeks and just need to be careful. (think: Rx says "4 vicodin per day"). Hydro-codone. clap clap clapclapclap.
I took pics with the palm of my xray that showed the break. See it? Oh, you didnt? Well, here...let me show you...You cant see the second one as well and the first one is only half visible...the quality is bad on my phone camera. He thinks an MRI will be more detailed and actually show the breaks better.

Once I realized I (1) wasnt having surgery (unless I heal wrong) or getting a back brace, I took a funny pic with my xray.. Wait..rephrase..TRIED To take a funny pic. I really just look distraught and hunched over. Whatever. (Michele was awesome enough to take me home to put on REAL clothes before the ortho appt) :)

Anyway, if Vaughn read this, I'd give him kudos, but since he doesnt..they all go to Michele. :) Thanks for being there for me, M. It.meant.a lot. And helped me make lighter of the sitch with a friend to laugh with... Thanks to all of you lovelies who found out and have checked on me! Vicodin is amazing.
Yeah, I broke my back. It's how I roll.... haha...If you need me, I'll be sitting in my papasan chair. It's like sitting in a big hug, people. ;) Thanks for reading my diatribe.
